Mirror
Show your baby a soft mirror as they lie on their back, move it from side to side to see if they follow
1Tummy time
Start tummy time with a rolled towel to support their upper chest. Give lots of encouragement.
1Talking
Lie back with your knees up, place your baby leaning on your knees, talk to them and see if they respond
2Grabbing
Place object near your baby's hands as you hold them on your lap to see if they swipe for them.
3Hand piano
Show your baby your hand and play air piano whilst making a different sound for each finger
3Outside
If its warm outside, allow your baby's hands and feet to touch different textures outside e.g. tree bark and leaves
3Songs and Actions
Sing songs with your baby and help them with the actions e.g. 'wind the bobbing up...' with their feet or hands.
4Talking
Use a higher pitched voice and short sentences so your baby can begin to concentrate on your voice.
4Pull ups
If your baby is happy to do this, allow them to grab your finger and lift them form lying to sitting on a soft surface.
4Rolling
Help your baby to roll by placing them half way and letting them hold your finger to roll themselves
5Friends
Find your nearest play group and go, see if your baby is interested in the variety of toys they have there
5Sitting and grabbing
Prop your baby up with pillows and offer them toys just out of reach to practice grabbing
6Tasting
Allow your baby to taste foods, some foods might take 10 tries before your baby enjoys them
6Simple tasks
Ask you baby to pass you a toy, say thank you and pass it back to them. Give them lots of praise and maybe a hug when they get it right.
10Pushing the floor
Your baby might like pushing against surfaces already. You can position them sitting on your knee as you sit on the floor and gently lower them so they feel their feet on the floor.
7Crawling
Tummy time can be used to encourage baby to start stretching out for toys. Babies may start commando crawling a this point.
7Ball rolling
Support baby to sit up using cushions and roll a ball to them saying 'roll to you', if they reach for the ball you can try and ask for it back.
7Recycling
Wash and dry some recycling items and give them to baby to make sounds, bite or throw around.
7Stacking cups
Stacking cups are fairly cheap, you can count as you stack and encourage baby to push the tower over.
7Push ups
Encourage baby push ups by shaking a rattle or making noises above them as they are on their tummy.
7Parcels
Loosely wrap a toy in paper and see if baby can unwrap it. Make this increasingly difficult for them and give lots of encouragement.
7Toy rotation
This could be starter earlier or late. Take away some toys for three weeks, then swap them back in. Baby will forget about them and will be more interested in playing with them again
7Actions
Sing a simple action game with baby e.g. wind the bobbin up. Move their hands for them to 'wind the bobbin'
8Get dressed
When getting baby dressed help them to relax by saying what you are doing in a sing-song voice e.g. one arm in, two arms in, over your head
8Edible messy play
Give liquid-y foods to play with on a big tray. You could also try adding cornflour and utensils. Baby will probably try to eat as well as play with anything you give them so make sure its all food safe.
8Go outside
Hopefully the weather is nice enough to let your baby loose on some grass, ideally with bare feet and legs to feel new sensations.
8Obstacles
If baby is mobile, try placing a leg or an arm in their way so they can practice clambering over you
8Hiding
Go behind an open door, remain in sight of your baby and make sure their are no hazards they could injure themselves on. Say 'find mama' and keep them interested by peeking out at them quickly.
8Temperatures
Give baby objects of different (safe) temperatures to feel. E.g. a warm flannel and something from the fridge and freezer.
8Makaton signing
There are courses online on how to start makaton (baby sign language). You could start doing makaton for food and drink and animals. Your baby may start signing the animals when you read.
8Mirror peek-a-boo
Play peek-a-boo in the mirror with baby or place a soft mirror between you and lift it up
8Playing drums
Play music and get pots, pans and wooden spoons to bang like baby is playing the drums.
8Standing
Encourage standing by saying 'hold on' to them as they try to hold onto the edge of the couch (for example).
8Pretending
Start playing pretend with your baby. Pretend to feed a soft toy with a spoon and see how they react.
8Balancing
Think about how to do this safely. Sit baby on a tilting surface and tilt slightly, watching them readjust their weight
8Asking of things
Encourage communication by doing something to amuse your baby (e.g. winding a wind up toy) and asking them 'again?'
9Library
Go to the library and show baby different books. Pick the book to read that the are taking an interest in.
9Bouncing
Show them bouncing a ball on the ground and say 'bounce'. Bounce them on the ball and say it again. Exercise balls are good for this.
9Reading
Keep reading baby a book a day. Point out different images in the books and make different noises to engage them
9Tasting
Make a plate of foods with different flavours e.g. lemon (sour), pear (sweet), courgette (bitter) and taste them with your baby, making different face reactions together.
9Reaching
Whilst baby is standing holding onto furniture, place a toy a little away from them so they can safely reach for it
10Bath time
Move baby into bigger bath instead of a baby bath or take them swimming. Encourage splashing
10Singing
Sing 'old macdonald had a farm' and do all of the animal noises. Add clapping. Ask baby to make animal noises to see if they copy e.g. 'what does a cow say'
10Passing toys
Ask baby to pass toys from their toy box or in the path and stretch out your hand e.g. pass me the duck
10Talking about textures
Make a tray of different objects. Describe each object to baby e.g. this foam cube is really light, this mug is heavy, this carpet is soft, this sand paper is rough. You can also categorise the objects.
